Stainless Steel Coil Tube (Coiltube) for Enamelled Reactor Applications — Structural Improvement Series

Product Overview

The Stainless Steel Coil Tube (hereinafter referred to as "Coiltube") is a precision-engineered heat transfer element manufactured by Wenzhou Jixing Metal Materials Co., Ltd., specifically designed for integration into large-volume enamelled (glass-lined) chemical reactors. This product addresses the critical engineering challenge of internal coil tube leakage observed in high-capacity ammonium chloride (NH₄Cl) production reactors, with a proven track record in 10 cubic meter (10 m³) scale enamelled reactor systems.

Coiltubes serve as integral heat exchange components within reactor assemblies, facilitating efficient thermal management through convective and conductive heat transfer mechanisms. The coil geometry maximizes the heat transfer surface area within a confined volume, enabling precise temperature control essential for exothermic and endothermic chemical reactions. This product represents a structurally improved design that eliminates the chronic leakage failure modes associated with conventional coil tube configurations in enamelled reactor environments.

Material & Properties

The Coiltube is fabricated from high-grade austenitic stainless steel, selected for its exceptional corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and thermal stability under the aggressive chemical environments encountered in ammonium chloride synthesis and processing.

Manufacturing Process

The manufacturing of this structurally improved Coiltube follows a rigorous, multi-stage process designed to ensure dimensional accuracy, metallurgical integrity, and long-term service reliability in demanding enamelled reactor environments.

  1. Raw Material Selection & Verification: Premium-grade stainless steel seamless tubes (ASTM A213 TP316L) are procured from certified mills with full material traceability documentation, including Mill Test Certificates (MTCs) compliant with EN 10204 Type 3.1. Incoming material undergoes positive material identification (PMI) via optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and ultrasonic thickness measurement.
  2. Cutting & Preparation: Tubes are cut to precise lengths using CNC-controlled sawing equipment to ensure square end preparation within ±0.5 mm tolerance. End faces are deburred and chamfered for subsequent forming and welding operations.
  3. Cold Bending / Coiling: Tubes are formed into the specified coil geometry using CNC-controlled rotary bending machines. The bending process is performed at ambient temperature (cold forming) to maintain the metallurgical properties of the austenitic stainless steel. Bending parameters are optimized to prevent wall thinning, ovality distortion, and surface cracking. Each bend is inspected for dimensional accuracy using coordinate measuring machines (CMMs).
  4. Structural Improvement — Anti-Leakage Design: The coil tube incorporates a structurally enhanced design specifically engineered to eliminate the internal leakage failure modes observed in conventional coil tubes within enamelled reactors. Key improvements include:
    • Reinforced wall thickness at high-stress zones (bend apex regions) to prevent fatigue cracking under thermal cycling.
    • Optimized coil pitch and bundling geometry to minimize differential thermal expansion between the coil tube and the enamelled reactor shell, reducing mechanical stress at attachment points.
    • Improved end-seal design with enhanced gasket interfaces or welded connections to prevent leakage at the coil-to-header junctions.
    • Internal support structures that maintain coil geometry under fluid dynamic loading, preventing vibration-induced fretting and fatigue failure.
    • Reduced dead zones within the coil geometry to minimize stagnant fluid accumulation and localized corrosion initiation.
  5. Welding & Joining: All welds are performed using Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG) technique with argon gas shielding and internal inert gas backing to ensure full penetration and prevent internal oxidation. Welders are certified to ASME BPVC Section IX qualification standards. Weld parameters are documented and traceable for each production lot.
  6. Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT): Where applicable, welded assemblies undergo solution annealing at 1050–1100 °C followed by controlled cooling to relieve residual welding stresses and restore full corrosion resistance. This treatment eliminates sensitization and ensures uniform microstructure throughout the coil assembly.
  7. Surface Finishing & Passivation: The completed coil tube assembly undergoes acid pickling and passivation treatment per ASTM A967 to remove mill scale, discoloration, and any residual welding contaminants. The passivation process forms a stable chromium oxide passive film on the surface, enhancing corrosion resistance. Electropolishing may be applied to achieve ultra-smooth internal surfaces (Ra ≤ 0.4 μm) for applications requiring high cleanliness.
  8. Quality Inspection & Testing:
    • Dimensional Inspection: 100% verification of coil diameter, pitch, height, tube OD, and wall thickness against engineering drawings.
    • Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): Radiographic Testing (RT) or Ultrasonic Testing (UT) on 100% of welds per ASME BPVC Section V. Eddy Current Testing (ET) on coil tubes to detect wall thinning or subsurface defects.
    • Leak Testing: 100% helium leak testing at a detection sensitivity of 1 × 10⁻⁹ Pa·m³/s to verify absolute leak-tightness of the coil assembly.
    • Hydrostatic Pressure Testing: Each coil tube is pressure tested at 1.5 times the maximum working pressure for a minimum hold time of 30 minutes, with no visible leakage or pressure drop permitted.
  9. Packaging & Delivery: Completed coil tubes are wrapped in protective VCI (Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor) film, crated in wooden or steel shipping containers with adequate cushioning, and shipped with full documentation including MTCs, NDT reports, pressure test certificates, and dimensional inspection reports.
